Selecting a DSL upgrade service can be a challenge. With broadband delivered in wireless, cable or satellite form, there are several service options offered through multiple providers to choose from. Without getting overwhelmed by the choices, here are several factors to consider before signing up for a DSL deal.

1. The first thing you should do is determine what type of service is provided in your area. You may not have the same choices as city bound individuals if you live in a country or remote area. You may be limited to ADSL or satellite based services. ADSL usually requires that you are located a certain proximity from the service provider. You will need to canvas local providers to determine what your choices are. This can really narrow down your choices.

2. You need to determine what your requirements are. Businesses will require a larger capacity than individual accounts. Service provider plans are based on speed, capacity and the length of the contract. If you’re a heavy downloader then you will require an account with a large capacity. Cheaper plans that have capped limits won’t service your requirements. Businesses or individuals that upload more than they download may be better suited to SDSL that supports higher upload speeds.

3. Installation costs will also factor into your choice of services and plans. Cheaper plans do not always include hardware and can end up costing more once you buy a modem or router. This can also make some plans more appealing if they include hardware. Some deals also offer cash rebates if you are a cable account holder and you switch over to a DSL service that uses a phone line.

4. Some plans also subsidize other services such as TV or VOIP services. If you are a frequent user of these types of services, bundled deals offered through some service providers could provide some cost savings. You will need to investigate the options to come to an informed conclusion.

5. Research on the internet and compare plans. Consumer review sites are a great way to get feedback about service experience, installation waiting times and service provider speeds. You will be able to discover more plan and pricing options this way too.

Take the time to do some research and you will discover a better DSL deal. With the information provided by the internet and the competition provided by the market place
There’s no need to settle for one provider when there may be several better options
to choose form

I’ve been asked this question so many times I thought I’d put my thoughts down here for you to read. Let’s start by pointing out a couple things first. First off, depending on where you live, you may not have a choice of access. Satellite may be your only choice, which makes this null and void. Don’t fret, satellite is better than any dial-up and the contract lengths are generally 12-14 months in length. It will cost a bit more, given the extra equipment involved, but it certainly beats dial-up (if you can afford it).

Ok, on to the two major broadband access methods, cable and DSL. When I’m asked this question, I usually follow it with questions of my own.

1st. What type of internet surfing do you do? Are you a gamer, shopper, email user, web developer, music downloader, online video watcher, video editor or casual surfer?

2nd. How many computers will you have connected to the internet at one time?

3rd. Do you plan on ‘leveraging’ your broadband investment for home security or VoIP? (Voice over Internet Protocol is a method of making and receiving your phone calls using your broadband connection.)

When making your decision keep in mind that cable access, generally, cost more. The higher cost comes with the benefits of more speed. Up to 6 meg download, or the amount of information you can receive ‘down’ from the internet.

Loading web pages, listening to music online or watching video online are all impacted by your download speed. DSL is about 1.5 meg down in comparison. Not only does this impact ‘your’ surfing behavior, but if you plan to have more than 1 computer access the internet at the same time, keep in mind you’re ’sharing’ this connection. Sharing the connection means sharing that download ‘pipe’. (your internet connection) Uploading to the internet (file attachments in email, uploading web pages, etc. impact your upload speed. Cable upload speeds are around 384K while DSL is around 128K.

If you wish to leverage your investment in broadband by using VoIP, keep in mind that DSL is provided through the copper wires of your phone line. Having VoIP as a primary phone line without local phone service is very, very rare. This type of access is called ‘naked DSL’ and is not very common. We hope this will change in time, but for now, check with your local phone company. If you plan on leveraging your investment, check first.

So the answer to the question Cable or DSL is really all about your usage and what you’re willing to pay. Yes, cable is more expensive but it also comes with the additional benefits of faster speed and the ability to leverage your investment using VoIP as a primary phone service.

Lastly, when I’m asked what I personally use at home? I use cable broadband access and VoIP phone service. I’m very pleased with both and don’t plan on changing any time soon.

If you’re still unsure which is right for you, there are many web sites out there to provide you with additional information. Our site can help you as well so we hope to see you there!

Happy surfing.

One of the common problems among internet users is testing their internet connection to pinpoint the exact problem. There is a big number of internet users who use DSL, and cable modem service.

You set us your connection the way your ISP (internet service provider)instruct you to. Sometimes, it doesn’t work for numerous reasons.

You service is not ready, your hardware in not connected properly, or your ISP is having problems.

Whatever the cause of the problem maybe, there are some diagnostic tools you can use in Windows XP, in order to identify the problem.

If you are not exact in your diagnostic, you will get a good idea at least.

Before we get to the diagnostic tools, let us discuss what is involved in an internet connection.

The information travels over the internet to your computer through your ISP service. This is done through a High speed modem then to a network card installed in your computer.

Your computer is called a host, your service provider will give
you the DNS IP address, and you get your login and password. That is all what you have from your ISP.

Sometimes, your internet connection fails, and you want to find
out the problem. You may be able to fix it, or at least get some
information about the problem to advise your isp for help.

You will start by accessing the command prompt by going in sequence to:

Start menu, program, accessories, then command prompt. A window
will open where you type commands from the prompt.

At the command prompt, you type: IPCONFIG. This command will give you the active network connection on your computer. Here is an example:

PPP adapter Copy :

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.239.158.45

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 68.239.158.45

The above output was produced when I ran the Ipconfig command on my own computer running Window XP OS, and A DSL connection. The IP address is my computer address assigned by the ISP.

Please note, you can add an option to this command, in order to get more detailed information about your connection. Here is the output, when I ran the same command with the
“all” option.

Ipconfig /ALL

PPP adapter Copy :

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.239.158.45

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 68.239.158.45

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 151.198.0.39
151.197.0.39
NetBIOS over TCP/IP. . . . . . . . : Disabled

Notice now, the output includes the phisycal address of the network interface card installed in my computer. Also, you see the DNS IP addresses. With the above information, I didn’t have any problems.

Supposed ,I disconnect my DSL connection and ran the command again, this is the new result:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Notice in this case, where I disconnected my connection, you don’t get a DNS server. This tells you that I am not connected to the internet.

Also, notice the IP address starts with 192.168, which is the default address whenever your computer is not connected to the internet.

Another command is the ping command. It will allow to check if a computer is connected to the network and ready to communicate, whether intranet,
or internet.

Once you run it,it will sent a packet to the computer specified and gives the time it took for the packet to travel. This is an a output when I tried to ping www.yahoo.com:

C:>ping www.yahoo.com

Pinging www.yahoo.akadns.net [216.109.118.66] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 216.109.118.66: bytes=32 time=35ms TTL=55

Reply from 216.109.118.66: bytes=32 time=39ms TTL=55

Ping statistics for 216.109.118.66:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 39ms, Average = 38ms.

That shows that the host was reachable, and connected to the internet.

A very important command is the Nslookup. This will let you check if DNS (domain name server) is working properly. The function of the DNS server is to translate ip addresses to domain name of the networked computer. Here is an example:

C:> nslookup www.yahoo.com

Server: home5.bellatlantic.net

Address: 151.198.0.39

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: www.yahoo.akadns.net

Addresses: 216.109.118.67

Aliases: www.yahoo.com

So, you enter the name after Nslookup, it will give you IP addresses and vice versa.

In summary, there more commands in Windows Xp, but using the three above commands should give you a good idea about your internet connection problems. You can find where the problem is occurring. Is it your machine, or the ISP.

Thanks,

Thank goodness for the Internet! How did we ever get along without it? The answer to that is simple: very slowly. Over the last decade, the World Wide Web has evolved to provide more access to more people all over the planet. As with every global expansion, it has presented all kinds of business opportunities for those looking for a piece of virtual pie. With so many DSL service providers in competition, how do you know which one to chose?

You need to speak the lingo. There’s a lot of jargon involved in technology. You have to understand what everything means so you can ask intelligent questions and make informed decisions. Part of what makes the process ridiculously complicated is that it’s common for various terms to be used for the same technology or equipment. The word broadband refers to technology that allows more than one channel to transmit over a single wire, as opposed to dial-up which only lets on channel on the wire at a time. Sometimes this word is used interchangeably with DSL. A modem is a box that converts the signal, either digital or analog, into something your computer can understand. There are different kinds of modems with different features: broadband, cable, wireless and dial-up.

DSL stands for digital subscriber line, referring to the fact that it used a phone line to transfer digital data. Unlike ancient dial-up connections, DSL will allow digital information and voice waves to travel over the same phone line at the same time, so there’s no need for the telephone to be tied up by the computer, and an intrusive phone call won’t knock you offline. Telephones and computers can coexist peacefully in the same home. DSL will only work over a limited distance, so it may not be possible to get that kind of service in a small town or rural community. Before you get too deep into your research, you had better contact your phone company to make sure that DSL is available in your area.

Your phone company may suggest some possible DLS providers that are active where you live. Of course, the first thing most people look at is the price. The cost of service typically doesn’t vary all that much. If you do stumble upon a provided that is significantly less than the others find out what’s wrong with them. Do they not offer any kind of customer service? No help with installation? Remember, you usually get what you pay for.

Once you’ve got a short list, evaluate which ISPs or internet service providers they work with. Also, most companies will want you to sign an agreement or a contract. Very similar to what you would enter into with a cell phone company. Most people would rather shoot for a short (typically a minimum of one year) contract. That way your options are as open as possible and you won’t be locked in for too long. However, if you’re confident in your choice, there are usually discounts and other perks offered to those who sign on for longer.

You will most likely be some new equipment involved, usually a router (modem) and some software installation. Check to make sure if you are buying the equipment or renting it. Will someone be coming to your home to set things up, or will that be your responsibility? If you’re not so techno savvy, look for a provider with 24-hour support. The deciding factor should be the amount of service and support you get for the price. You can visit http://www.dsl-service-providers-guide.com to learn more about broadband internet.

Besides freeing up your telephone line, the biggest draw if DSL is speed. You want to ask about the rate of both downloads and uploads to help make your decision.

Advantages of a Broadband DSL Internet Connection
By Robert Thatcher

Anyone who has switched from a dial-up modem to broadband DSL knows the advantages of DSL internet access. The differences between the two are truly astounding. When people begin surfing the internet using broadband DSL after struggling with a dial-up modem, they never want to go back to a slow and often unreliable dial-up connection.

Broadband DSL connection speeds vary, but the average DSL connection rate ranges on average between 128 kilobits per second all the way up to 1.54 megabits per second. Typical dial-up modems can’t even come close to reaching typical broadband DSL speeds.

The remarkable speed of broadband DSL has made internet use more convenient, and DSL has improved the quality of many existing online activities such as shopping, banking, downloading audio and video, and gaming. Besides a notable increase in connection speed and website navigation, with broadband DSL, internet users are always connected to the world wide web. DSL provides valuable information and online activities that remain just a few keystrokes away.

Broadband DSL saves money as well as valuable time. Broadband DSL eliminates the need for additional phone lines. People using broadband DSL are able to talk on the phone while browsing the net, and all computers within a household can surf the web independently with the use of wireless routers.

Security is another plus for broadband DSL users. Broadband DSL subscribers use their own private telephone lines to make contact with their DSL service provider. Cables and lines are not shared by other internet subscribers, and therefore user access is private and very secure.

Broadband DSL is constantly improving as new technology is discovered and implemented. When considering the cost of broadband DSL versus the cost of dial-up, there is no comparison. The benefits of broadband DSL are immeasurable. Broadband DSL is truly the solution for businesses and consumers wanting quick and reliable internet connectivity.

Some DSL Broadband Definitions
By Steve Cash

Often too many people get confused with all the definitions, here we have explained in easy to understand terms.

ADSL:
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line – asymmetric meaning it’s faster downstream than upstream.

ASAM:
Advanced Services Access Manager -Whether you have a DSLAM or ASAM in your exchange doesn’t really matter. They do the same thing. See DSLAM’s as well.

ATM:
Asynchronous Transfer Mode – a method of encapsulation which is capable of many virtual circuits. With these, providers (ISP’s) can split an ATM connection (155Mbit or 622Mbit) up into many connections. ATM isn’t just used for DSL but in the case of DSL it’s used to provision each customer.

Contention Ratios:
A contention ratio is the number of users to xMbit of bandwidth. For example some providers offer 2Mbit DSL, with a ratio of 50:1, meaning 50 users to 1Mbit of bandwidth.

CPE:
Customer Premises Equipment, the term that describes the equipment used on the customer end of a connection, for example your DSL modem/router or cable modem.

DSL:
Digital Subscriber Line.

DSLAM:
Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer – They are placed in DSL enabled Telecomm exchanges, when your modem syncs up and the DSL light comes on, it means you are connected. When data travels down your connection, it goes from the CPE -> DSLAM -> RAN -> ISP

ERX:
Edge Routing Exchange. See RAN.

IPNet:
Telecommunications backhaul networks for carrying traffic from the customer to the ISP, i.e. carrying traffic from RAN’s to ISP’s.

Ping or Latency:
A ping measures the time in milliseconds that it takes for a packet to travel from your computer to a remote computer and back to you again. Just because you can’t ping a given host, quite a lot of providers are beginning to filter ICMP (pings come under this protocol) traffic because it is commonly used to attack hosts and wastes a lot of bandwidth.
Many providers also give low priority to ping (ICMP) traffic which may mean your ping at a command line isn’t very good, but in say a game, things may be fine.

RAN:
Regional Access Node These aggregates many DSLAM’s connections and then feed the data to an ISP

RTT
Round Trip Time – the time it takes in milliseconds for a packet to go from A to B and back again. See ping.

SDSL
Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line – symmetrical meaning the same speed up and down.

Units

There is a major difference between UPPER and lowercase

MB = MegaBytes
Mb = Megabits
kB = KiloBytes
kb = Kilobits

MB/s = MegaBytes per second
Mb/s = Megabits per second
kB/s = KiloBytes per second
kb/s = Kilobits per second

There is 8bits to a Byte, 8kb = 1kB

1Meg connections only transfer at 128kB/sec
or an 8Mb connection only transfers at 1024kB/sec or 1MB/s

Disconnected again? Tired of missing phone calls because you spend too much time online with a dial up connection that moves slower than that snail crawling on the floor? There are plenty of people who know that feeling, and in a culture that values speed and the ability to get things done quickly, it is no surprise that DSL Internet connections are becoming increasingly popular. DSL Internet connections are much faster and more reliable than basic dial up connections, and are much better than their dial up competitors. In fact, the competition between the two isn’t even close.

Unless you live or work in a very remote and rural area, you should have the option of getting a much faster internet than dial up, especially through DSL Internet connections. If high-speed Internet services are available, your choice will be between DSL or cable modem services. Cable Internet is fairly self-explanatory to a lot of people, but you might be asking yourself, what are DSL Internet connections?

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL uses a specialized technology to cram large amounts of data onto copper wires, which is how the direct Internet line can be opened without having to block off your phone. A DSL Internet connection can also sometimes be called an always on connection because it uses existing 2-wire copper telephone line connected to the premise and will not tie up your phone as a dial-up connection does. Since a DSL Internet connection is always on, you never have to dial up into an ISP or block off the phone line. There isn’t even a need to get a second phone line. The two main categories of DSL for home subscribers are called ADSL and SDSL.

What are the differences between the two? One is simply location. ADSL is generally the most common form of DSL Internet connection sold by Internet providers in not only the United States, but in most of North America in general. ADSL is a short abbreviation for the longer, more technical term of “asymmetric digital subscriber line.” ADSL does require a special type of modem, so if you are looking around at possible DSL Internet connections, be sure that you have the right set up on your computer (or that the right modem can be added) before doing any purchasing.

SDSL is short for “symmetric digital subscriber line,” and is much more common in Europe than in North America. This works much the same way as ADSL, but is more technological and does allow more data to be sent and received than an ADSL connection. SDSL is a DSL Internet connection that also requires a special modem.

Cable Internet is the main competitor to DSL. There are still a lot of arguments over which is faster, which is the better deal, which works best. There does not appear to be a clear winner between the two. While Cable Internet offers speeds that are up to twice as fast as any DSL Internet connections, unlike DSL, cable uses a “shared bandwidth” which means that at any given time the actual download speeds can vary quite a bit. At a busy time, DSL might actually be faster because too many users will slow down a cable internet connection, though at a down time, the cable might edge out the DSL.

There are commonly questions about security. While security is always an issue with high speed Internet, there is no way to determine if one is really safer than the other. In this situation, whether you have Cable Internet or a DSL Internet connection, it makes sense to have a proven anti-virus and anti-spy ware package on your computer to deal with any inevitable problems that will occur.

Then there is the bottom line question in almost every argument: which one is the better buy for the price? Which is cheaper? The problem is, there is no standard prices that make comparisons easy. The price of a DSL Internet connection is dependent on several factors, including: competition, level of competition, location, and variety of local choices. The ideal situation is where you have two, or even three, companies in your area vying over the Cable Internet and DSL Internet market. These will be the areas that have the most competitive pricing. Otherwise, you simply need to check your area. There is no point in giving a ball park price if it is not available for that in your area. The best option is the best one available.

Still, there is no question that a DSL Internet connection is far superior to dial up in virtually every way. This is from being able to keep a main phone line open, to much faster downloads and surfing, to the constant rate of speed that DSL can offer. This is definitely a smart buy, and it is easy to see why the popularity continues to increase.
